Department of Pharmacognosy

Pharmacognosy is the study of crude drugs obtained from Medicinal Plants, Animals, Fungi, and other natural sources. It is "the study of the Physical, Chemical, Biochemical, and Biological properties of drugs. The research areas in Pharmacognosy are continually growing. Today it includes various aspects of cell and molecular biology in relation to natural products, ethnobotany and phytotherapy, in addition to the more traditional analytical method development and phytochemistry. Our department contributes for both research and teaching to understand novel approaches in this field such as combinatorial biosynthesis, genomics and proteomics. The major research area of interest is Pharmacognostical, Phytochemical and various pharmacological activities of some indigenous medicinal and herbal plants.

Pharmacognosy covers the following areas, Medical Ethnobotany: The study of the traditional use of plants for medicinal purposes. Ethnopharmacology: The study of the pharmacological qualities of traditional medicinal substances. Phytochemistry, the study of chemicals derived from plants (including the identification of new drug candidates derived from plant sources). Marine Pharmacognosy, the study of chemicals derived from marine organisms.
